Even if you're not working towards a major in music, we may have classes to interest you — Popular Music Until 1960, the Rock 'n' Roll Era and BeyondHistory of Jazz, Music and Sound Technology, Music and Film, etc.  You may also take an instrument or voice class as an elective (by audition), and you can participate in any of our ensembles such as choirs, jazz band, orchestra, and opera.

The Department of Music is located in the bustling Dalhousie Arts Centre, which is also home to the Department of Theatre and Dalhousie Art Gallery. The Art Centre's facilities include the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, Sir James Dunn Theatre, teaching studios and classrooms, numerous practice rooms, a Macintosh computer lab, and a music technology/recording studio.

Halifax is a great city to hear live music. Students can attend concerts by Symphony Nova Scotia (SNS), Nova Sinfonia, Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra and touring acts. Halifax is also festival central, with events such as the Kiwanis Music Festival, Scotia Festival of Music, Atlantic Jazz Festival, and several chamber music series to keep the scene lively all year long.
